The Statistical Service announces that it has published the annual report "Statistics of Education" for the school year 2007/08. The report provides detailed information regarding the number of educational institutions, pupils/students, teaching and non-teaching personnel and expenditure, at each level of education, as well as Cypriot students abroad.
The main data included in the report are:
· At all levels of education, there were 1.296 educational institutions, 175.984 pupils/students and 15.982 teachers, giving a pupil/teacher ratio of 11,0.
· Of the total number of pupils/students, 71,8% were enrolled in public schools and 28,2% in private schools.
· The enrolments of pupils/students by level of education were as follows: Pre-school and Pre-primary 27.559, Primary 56.522, Secondary 65.890, Tertiary 25.688 and Special education 325.
· Cypriot students abroad totaled 22.530. Τheir distribution by level of education was as
follows: Tertiary non-university 1.598 or 7,1%, Tertiary University Undergraduate
18.603 or 82,6%, Tertiary Postgraduate (Master’s) 1.819 or 8,1% and Doctoral (Ph.D) 510 or 2,3%.
The most popular fields of study were: Business and Administration 12,7%, Health 10,7, Humanities 10,0%, Social and behavioral sciences 9,0% %, Engineering 8,3% and Teacher training and Education science 6,9%.
The main countries of study were: Greece 59,2%, United Kingdom 30,8%, U.S.A. 2,3%, Bulgaria 1,8%, Hungary 1,3%, France 0,8%, and Germany 0,7%.
l Public expenditure in public and private education for year 2007 stood at €1.110,0 millions, for all levels. The current public cost per pupil/student in public schools by level of education was as follows: Pre-school and Pre-primary €4.783, Primary €4.801, Special €38.661, Secondary €7.726 and Tertiary €14.283. The cost per student abroad was €4.463 .
