The Statistical Service announces that it has published the “Demographic Report” for 2007. The report gives, inter alia, an account of population developments and provides data on a time series basis on fertility, mortality, marriages, divorces and migration.
The most salient demographic developments during 2007 can be summarized as follows:
· The population in the Government controlled area is estimated at 789,3 thousands at the end of 2007 compared to 778,7 thousands in the previous year, recording an increase of 1,4%. The population increase in 2007 is mainly explained by an increased net migration balance (7.390 persons) and to a lesser extent by the natural increase (3.195 persons).
· In 2007 the number of births totalled 8.575 compared to 8.731 in 2006. The total fertility rate, which gives the mean number of children per woman was estimated at 1,39 in 2007 and has, since 1995, remained below the replacement level of 2,10.
· The number of deaths reached 5.380 in 2007 compared to 5.127 in 2006.
· The expectation of life at birth is estimated at 78,3 years for males and 81,9 for females for the period 2006/07.
· In 2007 the number of marriages increased to 13.422 from 12.617 in 2006. Ecclesiastical marriages increased from 3.799 in 2006, to 4.444 in 2007, and civil marriages increased from 8.818 in 2006 to 8.978 in 2007.
· In 2007 the number of divorces decreased to 1.648 from 1.753 in 2006.
