The Statistical Service, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society announce the completion of the National Phase of the European Statistical Competition 2019-20.

Participation in the national phase of the competition was open to all secondary-age students who were studying at any officially recognized educational institution of Cyprus. Students participated in teams of 2 to 3 pupils and each team had a teacher from their institution acting as the tutor, who was supervising, coordinating and tutoring the team. The teams participated in one of two categories as follows:

Category A: Upper Secondary [up to 18 years on 31/12/2019]

Category B: Lower Secondary [up to 16 years on 31/12/2019]

Participant teams took two eliminatory assignments. The first assignment included three parts: (a) Basic knowledge test, (b) Use of official statistical data sources test and (c) Interpretation of statistical reports test. The top ten teams in each category, with the highest scores in the first assignment, qualified for the second assignment. In the second assignment the teams had to prepare an output from the exploitation of a dataset in Excel which was facilitated by the organizers.

The winners of the national phase, one of the Category A and one of the Category B, as well as the teams with the second highest overall score, are awarded. The winning teams receive the following awards: for the tutor of the winning team a tablet and for each student of the winning team the amount of 200 (two hundred) euro. The teams in second place receive the following awards: for the tutor of the team an external disc and for each student of the team the amount of 50 (fifty) euro. The first two teams with the highest scores of each category, are eligible to participate in the European phase of the competition.

Due to the protection measures taken against the coronavirus, the awards ceremony on April 9, 2020 has been canceled. The organizing committee will arrange the award of the prizes in due time.
