Foreign Trade Statistics: April 2020 (final data) and May 2020 (provisional data)

The Statistical Service of Cyprus announces the release of final data on the foreign trade of Cyprus for April 2020 and of provisional data for May 2020.

Foreign trade statistics, April 2020

The main developments in the foreign trade of Cyprus in April 2020 were:

(a) Total imports of goods (from EU Member States and from third countries) amounted to €418,3 mn in April 2020 as compared to €628,3 mn in April 2019, recording a decrease of 33,4%.

(b) Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in April 2020 were €90,3 mn as compared to €128,3 mn in April 2019, recording a decrease of 29,6%. Domestic exports of industrial products in April 2020 were €77,8 mn compared to €112,4 mn in April 2019, whilst domestic exports of agricultural products in April 2020 were €11,2 mn compared to €13,8 mn in April 2019.

(c) Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in April 2020 were €158,6 mn as compared to €116,3 mn in April 2019, recording an increase of 36,4%.

The data are included in the monthly electronic publication “Intra & Extra EU Trade Statistics (Summarised Data)” for April 2020, which is available free of charge from the website of the Statistical Service, under the section “Publications” in the statistical theme Foreign Trade.

 

Foreign trade statistics, May 2020

On the basis of provisional data, the main developments in the foreign trade of Cyprus in May 2020 can be summarized as follows:

(a) Total imports of goods were €462,3 mn as compared to €726,8 mn in May 2019, recording a decrease of 36,4%. Imports from other EU Member States in May 2020 were €298,3 mn and from third countries €164,0 mn, compared to €416,3 mn and €310,5 mn respectively in May 2019. Imports in May 2020 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels), with total value of €9,7 mn as compared to €95,2 mn in May 2019.

(b) Total exports of goods in May 2020 were €273,9 mn as compared to €294,3 mn in May 2019, recording a decrease of 6,9%. Exports to other EU Member States in May 2020 were €66,3 mn and to third countries €207,6 mn, compared to €86,1 mn and €208,2 mn respectively in May 2019. Exports in May 2020 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels), with total value of €110,2 mn as compared to €62,7 mn in May 2019.

(c) Total imports of goods (from EU Member States and from third countries) in January – May 2020 amounted to €2.985,9 mn as compared to €3.345,0 mn in January – May 2019, recording a decrease of 10,7%. Total exports of goods (to EU Member States and to third countries) in January – May 2020 were €1.259,3 mn compared to €1.479,2 mn in January – May 2019, registering a decrease of 14,9%. The trade deficit was €1.726,6 mn in January – May 2020 compared to €1.865,8 mn in the corresponding period of 2019.
