Survey Results: Environmental Protection and Resource Management Expenditures in the Public Sector, 2017 and 2018

On the basis of the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Service, the total expenditure for environmental protection and resource management activities in the public sector in 2017 and 2018 is estimated at €95,8 million in 2018 compared to €75,6 million in 2017 and €99,0 million in 2016. These results correspond to 0,45%, 0,38% και 0,53% of the Gross Domestic Product for 2018, 2017 and 2016 respectively.

In 2018, the total current expenditure reached €81,2 million while investment expenditure amounted to €14,6 million. Furthermore, the subsidies or transfers given by the public sector for environmental protection purposes were lower than those received by €19,0 million.

By environmental domain, the majority of the current and capital expenditure had been utilised in 2018 to finance the protection of biodiversity and landscapes (€35,6 million or 37,1% of the total expenditure), the monitoring, treatment and disposal of solid waste (€28,0 million or 29,2%) and wastewater treatment (€14,8 million or 15,4%). The monitoring and abatement of air pollution and the protection of ambient air and climate absorbed €6,5 million, while the protection of soil, groundwater and surface water, €3,9 million. Other general environmental issues and actions for the protection of the natural environment accounted for €6,2 million and the abatement of noise and vibrations for €0,9 million.

The biggest amounts of expenditures were undertaken by the Forests Department, the Water Development Department, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth and the Department of Environment.
