Departure of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, to Luxembourg to participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nikos Christodoulides travels to Luxembourg today, 17 October where tomorrow, 18 October, he is due to participate in the session of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union.

Under the current affairs item on the agenda of the Council it is foreseen that, among other things, the ongoing illegal activities of Turkey in the enclosed area of Famagusta will be discussed, on the basis also of the relevant EU Declaration of 27 July 2021, while the Minister of Foreign Affairs will have the opportunity to brief his counterparts on the recent unlawful activities of Turkey in the EEZ of Cyprus.

Under the same item, the latest developments in Afghanistan, the Western Balkans, as well as Climate Diplomacy will also be discussed, the latter in view of the forthcoming COP26 Conference to be held in Glasgow.

Earlier on in the session, the Ministers will focus on the European Union's relations with the countries of the Gulf and the prospects for their further enhancement, as well as on the Eastern Partnership, especially in view of the Ministerial meeting that is expected to take place in November in preparation of the Summit that is scheduled for the month after.

Furthermore, the Foreign Ministers are expected to exchange views on the latest developments in Ethiopia, focusing on the need for humanitarian assistance.

Before the start of the Council's session, Mr Christodoulides will attend a working breakfast hosted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Mr Nikos Dendias, with the participation as a guest of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Libya, Ms Najla Mangoush.
