Written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Mr Andreas Iosif, on the President’s agenda

The European Council meeting in Brussels next Monday and Tuesday is the most important activity of President Nicos Anastasiades, next week.

On the agenda of the extraordinary Summit Meeting are the Ukrainian issue, the global energy crisis on the basis of the recent European Commission’s RePowerEU package, European Defence and Security and food security in the EU in the light of the war in Ukraine.

President Anastasiades is expected to brief the EU Heads of States on the new Turkish provocations in Ammochostos region. He will ask his counterparts to call on Turkey to show restraint, by avoiding tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean region and abandoning its expansion policy.

The President of the Republic will reiterate that Ammochostos belonged and will belong to its legal owners and residents, stressing that Turkey’s unacceptable actions and claims will not be accepted.

President Anastasiades will brief on the initiatives taken by the Greek Cypriot side in order to overcome the deadlock; it was in this context that the President made his proposal for the implementation of Confidence Building Measures, which are expected to assist in the effort to resume negotiations.

President Anastasiades will travel from Brussels to Rotterdam, Netherlands, to participate in the Congress of the European People’s Party, which will take place on 31st May and 1st June. During the Congress proceedings, the new President of the EPP will also be elected. President Anastasiades will have another opportunity to hold meetings and inform his interlocutors about the positions of the Republic of Cyprus on both the Cyprus issue and the issues that concern the European Union. In particular, during the plenary session on 1st June, he will have the opportunity to brief on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, including his initiatives to lift the deadlock, his assessments in relation to the developments in Ukraine and other European agenda issues, highlighting the energy and food crisis.

President Anastasiades will return to Cyprus next Wednesday, 1st of June.
