At midnight, the EU member states reached an agreement on the 6th package of sanctions against Russia.

Given the need to preserve the unity and cohesion of the EU, we welcome this development which is a step in the right direction.

The Republic of Cyprus welcomes the fact that important issues concerning Member States have been taken into consideration in terms of their economic viability. As we note on every occasion, sanctions are an important policy tool in the hands of the European Union and the decisions taken in this regard should be subject to the guidelines foreseeing that such measures should be sustainable and have far greater economic consequences for the third countries to which they are addressed, rather than the EU Member States.

At the same time, we stress the importance of mobilizing the tools available to modern democracies. Efforts on a diplomatic level should be intensified and strengthened so as to put an immediate stop to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which results in the loss of innocent lives, the uprooting of millions of families from their homeland and has a chain effect on the whole of Europe.
