Speech of the Minister of Defense, Mr Charalambos Petrides, at the New York Mediterranean Business Summit

Many thanks to the Hazlis & Rivas Economist team for hosting this Conference at the heart of New York City. Regardless of the events focus on business, growth and investments a horizontal issue pertaining all these areas is none other than security.

I am honored to share the panel with esteemed speakers and even more delighted that our panel follows the insightful keynote address by Senator Menendez.

Through the course of his remarkable career, his strong interest and focus on the Eastern Mediterranean, including of course Cyprus, has been instrumental in the paradigm shift that we are witnessing in the region.

Senator Menendez’s initiatives that led to the adoption of the “Eastern Mediterranean Partnership Energy and Security Congressional Act” is one of the pillars of the new security architecture that is rapidly transforming the Eastern Mediterranean and its relations with the US.

It will not come as a surprise to state at the outset that following Russia’s war in Ukraine we live in an era of unprecedented geopolitical instability and questioning of the rules based international order.

The Eastern Mediterranean is a region that has crisis and instability in its core. But at the same time, it’s a region that has the prospect to transform and achieve long lasting stability and security by building regional and transatlantic strategic partnerships for delivering prosperity and growth.

In my brief opening remarks, I would like to tackle some of the elements that the organisers included in the agenda for addressing the overall question - Can the Eastern Mediterranean nations get closer?

The short answer is yes. What is the way to do it you may ask? Through the continued alignment of their regional and national interests for achieving long lasting security and stability.
