Written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Mr Andreas Iosif, on the President’s agenda

The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades’ agenda for next week is a busy one, with meetings with two state leaders, in Lefkosia.

What stands out in President Anastasiades’ programme, is the meeting with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with whom he will discuss the latest developments in the Cyprus issue, the Turkish provocations and issues of common interest, such as Energy and Migration.

On Tuesday, 14 June, the President of the State of Palestine, Mr Mahmoud Abbas, will pay an official visit to Cyprus.

During the bilateral consultations that President Anastasiades will have with President Abbas, the President of the Republic will stress that Cyprus will remain a steadfast supporter of the solution to the Palestinian issue, in line with the UN Security Council resolutions.

President Anastasiades will stress, among other things, that the Republic of Cyprus is ready to work towards further deepening the bilateral relations of the two countries, in areas of common interest.

The Cyprus problem will of course be on the agenda of the meeting between President Anastasiades and President Abbas. The President of the Republic will inform about the efforts to end the Turkish occupation, the Turkish provocations in Ammochostos and the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as about the initiatives he has taken to resume negotiations, aiming at finding a solution to the Cyprus problem that will comply with the international law and the European acquis. In the evening , President Anastasiades will host a state banquet in honor of the President of the State of Palestine.

On Wednesday, 15 June, at 9:15 a.m., a meeting of the Council of Ministers will take place. At 10:30 a.m. a meeting on the traffic law enforcement camera system will follow, with the participation of the Ministers of Transport, Justice, the Deputy Minister of Research, the Chief of the Police, representatives of the Law Office and other officials.

Αt noon, President Anastasiades will be the keynote speaker at a lunch hosted by the Ambassador of France in Lefkosia, for EU Ambassadors accredited in Cyprus, on the occasion of the upcoming conclusion of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU. At 7:00 p.m., President Anastasiades will address the opening and naming ceremony of the AEK Larnaka sports academy.

On Thursday, 16 June, at 9:45 a.m., President Anastasiades will preside over a meeting with sheep and goat farmers. The meeting is part of the dialogue that the President of the Republic will have with the groups involved in the production of halloumi. At 11:30 a.m., the President of the Republic will award the Cyprus Export Award 2020. In his speech, he will refer to the government’s efforts to create a friendly economic environment that will contribute to turning Cyprus into an international business and high-level service centre. Reference is also expected to be made to the critical role of digital transformation for strengthening the resilience of the economy.

The National Plan “Cyprus – Tomorrow” includes major reforms and investments related to the digital transformation. After the award ceremony, President Anastasiades will host a lunch for the winners.

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, President Anastasiades will address the event on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Pancyprian Democratic Rally of Primary School Teachers, Nursery School Teachers and Special Education Teachers – Protoporia. 

On Friday, 17 June, at 11:00 a.m., President Anastasiades will meet with the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis, at the Presidential Palace.

Turkey’s provocative stance, especially as it is currently unfolding in the enclosed area of Varosha, and more generally, the unacceptable and provocative behaviour of Turkey, both towards Cyprus and Greece, as well as the revisionist positions that Turkey continues to put forward on the framework for a solution to the Cyprus problem, will be at the heart of the President’s meeting with the Prime Minister.

They are also expected to discuss the situation in Ukraine and the consequences of the ongoing war.

Their agenda also includes migration, energy issues, as well as other issues of common interest that have always guided the common policies pursued by Cyprus and Greece, and which have established the two countries as pillars of stability and peace in the region.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, the President of the Republic will deliver a speech at the DISY conference.

On Sunday, 19 June, at 10:00 a.m., the President of the Republic will address the event held on the occasion of the 1st journey of the Cyprus-Greece passenger connection, at Lemesos port. 

The Government has implemented its commitment to provide an alternative connectivity between Cyprus and continental Europe, succeeding in restoring the Cyprus-Greece ferry connection after 21 years.
