Written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Mr Andreas Iosif

The presence of the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, in Madrid, to participate in the Euro-Atlantic dinner hosted by the Prime Minister of Spain to the Heads of State of the EU and NATO and the meetings with UN Assistant Secretary General, Mr Miroslav Jenča, and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Mr Colin Stewart, stand out in the President’s programme for next week. The Cyprus problem, the Turkish threats and provocations, will be at the heart of the meetings that President Anastasiades will have, while his programme includes other issues related to the economy and education.

On Monday, 27 June, at 09:30 a.m., the ceremony for the appointment of the new members of the Government will be held, at the Presidential Palace. Mr Kyriakos Koushos will be appointed Minister of Labour and Social Insurance in place of late Zeta Emilianidou, while Mr Petros Demetriou will be appointed Deputy Minister to the President and Mr Pantelis Pantelides will assume duties as Director of the Office of the President of the Republic.

Αt 11:30 a.m. the President will have a meeting with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Mr Colin Stewart. The meeting will take place in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Negotiator on the Cyprus problem. The President of the Republic will present again the positions of the Greek Cypriot side and reiterate our will and commitment to resume the negotiation process for the settlement of the Cyprus issue.

In the afternoon of the same day, at 19:15, President Anastasiades will address the graduation ceremony of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Cyprus. The President of the Republic will present awards to students who have excelled.

On Tuesday, 28 June, the President of the Republic will travel to Madrid where the NATO Summit will take place. President Anastasiades has been invited and will attend a dinner hosted on the sidelines of the Summit to EU and NATO leaders by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, during which he will deliver a speech.

The trip to the Spanish capital will give President Anastasiades the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings with foreign leaders and inform them on issues that concern Cyprus, the most important of course being the Cyprus problem. His proposal to implement Confidence-Building measures, which will assist the whole process, and the need for the Turkish side to abandon its provocative actions and its intransigent stance, will be the main focus of President Anastasiades’ contacts. The President of the Republic returns to Cyprus on Thursday, 30 June.

On Friday, 1st July, at 09:30 a.m., a meeting will be held with the Ministers of Finance, Energy and representatives of CERA and EAC. The meeting that President Anastasiades will preside over, will address the price of electricity and renewable energy sources. The Government’s effort is to find ways to reduce the price of electricity for the benefit of consumers.

At 11:30 a.m., President Anastasiades will meet with the United Nations Assistant Secretary General for Europe, Asia and America at the Department of Political and Peace Affairs, Mr Miroslav Jenča. President Anastasiades will reiterate the readiness and will of the Greek Cypriot side to resume the process of talks on the solution of the Cyprus problem. He will reiterate that the agreed solution to the Cyprus problem is the Bizonal Bicommunal Federation and that the Turkish Cypriot side’s unacceptable position for the existence of allegedly two states in Cyprus, should be abandoned. President Anastasiades will again raise the issue, to Mr Jenča, of the illegal actions of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side and ask that the faits accomplis in Varosha be reversed.

On Friday evening, President Anastasiades will address the 10th CIPA Investment Awards ceremony. The President of the Republic will refer to the course of the Cyprus economy and the great value of the implementation of the Plan “Cyprus — Tomorrow” which will bring a new model of growth in the country, will contribute to the increase of GDP by 7% and create 11 thousand new job positions. 

On Saturday, 2 July, President Anastasiades will unveil a sculpture in memory of the former President of the Republic, Glafkos Clerides, at “Glafkos Clerides” park, in Germasogeia.
