First day of the World Conference of Overseas Cypriots deliberations

With the participation of delegates from all over the world, the main part of the deliberations of the World Conference of Overseas Cypriots by the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA) and the Youth of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) hosted in Cyprus, began today, at St Raphael Resort, in Lemesos.

The deliberations of the Conference were declared, last night, at Lefkosia Municipal Theatre.

First day’s deliberations began with a meeting dedicated on the celebration of the 20th anniversary since the foundation of NEPOMAK, during which the Presidential Commissioner, Mr Photis Photiou, and the President of the Youth Board of Cyprus, Mr Kleanthis Koutsoftas, delivered an address. Moreover, the Head of POMAK, Mr Andreas Papaevripides, the Head of PSEKA, Mr Philip Christopher and the President of NEPOMAK, Mr Christos Tuton, addressed the meeting, which was followed by the presentation of the magazine-dedication to the 20 years of NEPOMAK’s foundation (2002-2022) and an artistic program. Young Cypriots of the Diaspora were honoured in the framework of the meeting.

The 29th meeting of the Central Committee was afterwards held, chaired by POMAK President, Mr Andreas Papaevripides, during which a financial and an activity review was performed through the Audit Committee report.

The delegates were briefed by the Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, Ms Zetta M. Makri, on the subject of Greek schools of the Diaspora, as well as by the officer for investment promotions of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA), Mr Sarris Demetriou, on investment opportunities in Cyprus.

In addition, the delegates were briefed by the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Ms Natasa Pilides, on the issues of hydrocarbons and energy policy and a discussion, in a closed session, followed.

Then, they had the opportunity to participate in discussions with leaders and representatives of political parties about various issues and especially about the Cyprus problem.

In the afternoon, the Secretary of State at the Department for Romanians Everywhere, Mr Georghe-Florin Cârciu, the State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Mr Nemanja Starović, the High Commissioner of Diaspora Affairs of Armenia, Mr Zareh Sinanyan, the Secretary General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy, Mr John Chrysoulakis, and the Chairman of the Special Permanent Committee on Greeks Abroad of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr Savvas Anastasiadis, attended and addressed the Conference.

First day’s deliberations will be completed with an informative discussion on the issuance – renewal of identity cards and passports and other relevant issues that concern the Cypriots of the Diaspora, by the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Interior, Mr Kornelios Korneliou and Mr Costas Constantinou, respectively.
