Written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Mr Andreas Iosif, yesterday

The Informal European Council Summit in Prague and the official visit of the President of Portugal to Cyprus stand out in the programme of President Mr Nicos Anastasiades for next week.

On Monday, 3 October, at 7 p.m., the ceremony on the Physics award 2022 by the “Takis and Louki Nemitsas Foundation” will be held at the Presidential Palace. The prize will be awarded to Professor Paraskevas Sphicas. President Anastasiades will award the prize and address the event.

On Tuesday, 4 October, at 9:30 a.m., the President will preside over a meeting of the Council of Ministers.

On Wednesday, 5 October, the President of the Republic will open the deliberations on the 9th UNECE “Environment for Europe” Ministerial Conference. The conference will be held in Lefkosia from 5 to 7 October. In his address, President Anastasiades is expected to refer to the international initiative of Cyprus, which has developed an action plan that will address the environmental challenges of the countries of the region and reduce the impact of climate change, through scientific practices, aligned with the Paris Agreement. The Cyprus initiative has the support of a number of heads of state in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, as well as international organizations and the European Commission.

On the same day, the President of the Republic will depart for Prague, where on 6 October, the first meeting of the European Political Community will take place. The aim of the meeting is to strengthen the political dialogue between the EU Member States and third countries on the continent, as well as to create new prospects for cooperation.

The next day, 7 October, the Informal European Council Summit is scheduled to take place in the Czech capital. The summit will address developments regarding the war in Ukraine, as well as a number of issues related to the energy and economic sectors.

In order to prepare both for the meeting on the European Political Community and the Informal European Council Summit, the President of the Republic will participate on Tuesday, 4 October, in a teleconference with a small group of leaders, upon the invitation of the President of the European Council, Mr Charles Michel.

On Saturday, 8 October, the President of Portugal, Mr Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, will pay an official visit to Cyprus. Cyprus and Portugal maintain excellent relations at a government level. During their meeting, Presidents Anastasiades and De Souza are expected to discuss ways to further expand the relations between Cyprus and Portugal both bilaterally, as well as, within the European Union. The Cyprus problem will certainly be on the agenda, while the President of the Republic is expected to brief his Portuguese counterpart on the cooperations developed by Cyprus with neighbouring states, through relevant agreements. In the evening, President Anastasiades will host a dinner in honor of the President of Portugal.

On Sunday, 9 October, at 10:00 a.m., President Anastasiades will be the main speaker at the anti-occupational event “Days of Memory of Morfou” in Astromeritis village. He is expected to refer to the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, reiterating that the aim of our side is to find a solution in line with the United Nations Security Council resolutions and the international law and will comply with the European acquis. On the same day, he will attend a reception held in Lemesos, in the framework of the conference “Maritime Cyprus 2022”.
