Ambassador, Dr Kypros Giorgallis, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr Kassym-Jomart K. Tokayev

The new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Dr Kypros Giorgallis, presented yesterday his credentials to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr Kassym-Jomart K. Tokayev, at a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Astana.

The Ambassador relayed President’s Nikos Anastasiades warm regards and expressed his readiness and commitment to further strengthen and deepen the relations between the two countries and their cooperation, bilaterally as well as within the European Union – Republic of Kazakhstan context.

On his part, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan conveyed his personal wishes and cordial greetings to President Anastasiades. Furthermore, he attached emphasis on enhancing the political dialogue between the two countries at the bilateral level, as well as within the European Union – Republic of Kazakhstan context. In conclusion, he expressed his readiness to support the new Ambassador’s mission aiming at enhancing the relations between the two countries. 

During a meeting with the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Umarov Kairat, the Ambassador expressed inter alia grave concern regarding Turkey’s effort to grant the secessionist entity in the occupied part of Cyprus an “observer” status in the Organization of Turkic States. A decision, that would run contrary to international law, including UN Security Council resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984). Moreover, he informed his counterpart about recent developments pertaining to the Cyprus problem and the Eastern Mediterranean in general. 

On his part, the First Minister of Foreign Affairs, relayed the principled stance of his country vis a vis the solution of the Cyprus problem and reiterated Kazakhstan’s unwavering support regarding the principles of sovereignty and independence of states. Regarding the Republic of Cyprus, he stressed the importance that Kazakhstan attaches to Cyprus related United Nations Security Council Resolutions, with special references to the UN Security Council resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984).

On EU - Kazakhstan relations, the Ambassador stressed that the Republic of Cyprus remains supportive of their further enhancement, provided that these are anchored on the EU acquis and the respect of international law. 

Concerning the bilateral relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of Kazakhstan, the interlocutors reaffirmed their excellent level and exchanged result oriented ideas on their further strengthening. Special emphasis was attached on the need to mutually benefit from the bilateral institutional framework of cooperation, currently in place.
