State Gallery of Contemporary Art – Majestic: Arts Education Programme - April 2023

As part of the ongoing Arts Education Programme at the State Gallery of Contemporary Art – Majestic, children/families and adults are invited to participate this April in the following art, interactive play and kinetic improvisation workshops:

  • Saturday 8 April 2023, 15:00-17:00:

“The paintings become 3-dimensional: Art educational program for families with children 6-10 years”

Using paper as the main material and inspired by the artworks from the permanent exhibition at the State Gallery, kids and grown-ups create 3-dimensional works. Colorful papers and cardboards become the canvas for a creative process where exploration plays the most important role.

Participants discover collage techniques and create the most subversive artworks, as the paintings take on a 3-dimensional form. The aim of the program is to offer kids and grown-ups the opportunity to experiment with paper and discover its properties. They will cut, tear, fold and glue it, creating their own compositions with different forms, shapes and colors.

Designed and facilitated by: Eleni Piripitsi (educator/ facilitator of educational programs)

Limited number of participants (up to 10 families- max. 2 children per 1 adult), by order of priority.

Reservations required. For the participation form press here.

  • Thursday 20 April 2023, 19:00-21:00:

“Body and other landscapes: A movement improvisation workshop for adults”

The “body and other landscapes” is a movement improvisation workshop led by dance artist Konstantina Skalionta. The workshop draws from Konstantina’s artistic practice, the body and certain materials being its main tools, and invites participants to explore their own bodies and these materials as landscapes and as imprints of time and memory.

Participants will be guided towards exploring movement triggered by the senses, memory and imagination, in an environment that inspires safety. They will move with and from materials in the presence of others, practice witnessing movement, as well as explore drawing and writing as imprints of their own kinetic experience.

The workshop converses with various artworks of the Gallery exhibition and especially with Antis Ioannides’ “Dense Soul”, in which an inner landscape emerges through fragmented images, materials, shapes, colors, marks and words.

The workshop is open to adults with an interest in movement, improvisation, and performance.

Previous experience in these fields is not required. Comfortable clothing for this workshop is recommended.

Limited number of participants (10), by order of priority.

  • Saturday 22 April 2023, 15:00-16:00 and 16:30-17:30

“Treasure hunt for children at the State Gallery!”

A mysterious benefactor of the State Gallery has hidden somewhere in the building a treasure of great value. Little explorers will be asked to follow the clues they have left for them in order to find the treasure. They will have to follow the given rules and take on these roles: Each team has a leader, a key-holder and 2 pathfinders. Time is running out and the treasure may be left hidden forever!

Through the treasure hunt, children will have the opportunity to explore the Gallery space and interact with the artworks from the permanent exhibition. They will learn new things in a fun and interactive way, actively seeking instead of passively absorbing information. This method of play stems from the broad experience of the Way Out Escape Room team in designing escape rooms, which aims to develop specific patterns of thinking, combinatorial logic, observation and teamwork.

Designed and facilitated by Way Out Escape Room team

Suitable for children 6-10 years.

Limited number of participants (12), by order of priority.

  • Saturday 29 April 2023, 15:30-17:30:

"Portraits... somewhat different!: An art educational program for families with children 5-10 years"

What kind of strange shapes and forms would your face take if I gently pressed your cheeks, nose and lips? Would it be funny or scary? What would your portrait look like if I draw it without looking at the paper?

Through play with various media and materials, role-play and interaction games, kids and grown-ups taking part in this program will have the opportunity to come into direct contact with selected portraits from the permanent exhibition at the State Gallery, strengthen their communication skills and have fun!

These playful collaborative activities will encourage exploration and experimentation with the physical features of the participants' faces, emphasizing the various expressions and forms they can take, as well as the alternative ways in which they can be drawn on paper and other surfaces in order to create original, funny and somewhat different portraits.

Designed and facilitated by Elena Panagiotou (museum educator) and Kyriakos Theocharous (artist)

Limited number of participants (up to 9 families- max. 2 children per 1 adult), by order of priority.

Reservations required. For the participation form press here.
