National Phase – Award Ceremony

The award ceremony for the National Phase of the European Statistics Competition 2022-2023 finalist teams took place today, at the University of Cyprus. The ceremony was addressed by the Rector of the University and President of the Cyprus Statistical Society, Professor Tasos Christofides, the representative of the Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Dr Andreas Philippou and the representative of the Director of the Statistical Service, Ms Marilena Loukaidou.

In Cyprus, the competition, which was established as an annual event, is organized by the Statistical Service, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society. Participation in the national phase of the competition is open to all secondary-age students studying at any officially recognized educational institution in Cyprus. Students participate in teams of 2 to 3 pupils, each with a teacher from their institution acting as the tutor. The teams participated in one of two categories, Category A: Upper Secondary and Category B: Lower Secondary.

In this year's competition, 323 students took part, forming 111 teams. The first assignment included: (a) a Basic knowledge test, (b) a Use of official statistical data sources test and (c) an Interpretation of statistical reports test. A jury assessed the projects, and the winners were announced at the end of the process. European Phase – Results

After a tough national phase, which involved 19,000 students from 19 countries, the winning teams in each participating country took part in the European final. They were asked to make a two-minute video on the topic of well-being. Contestants had to imagine being invited to an international event to present a video about well-being in their country, based on official statistics.

A jury of European experts in the fields of statistics, mathematics, well-being and communication assessed the 63 submissions to choose the top 5 videos in both the age group 14-16 (30 submissions) and the age group 16-18 (33 submissions).

Winners of the 16-18 age group

In the senior age group (16-18), the first prize goes to team KOMPOT (Slovenia) with their touching video on the reasons why protagonist Branko should not leave Slovenia. The jury was impressed by the creative story used to counter the narrator’s questions and thoughts with statistical data, as well as the technical quality of the video.

Team ALGEBROS (Luxembourg) is second and team GAVRAN (Croatia) takes home third place. Teams SEPTIMAGJH and JASEJA (both from Slovakia) take respectively fourth and fifth place.

Winners of the 14-16 age group

Team AFS_GR_1 (Greece) takes first prize in the junior age group (14-16) with their very professional video on the daily life of Yannis and different dimensions of well-being in Greece. The jury particularly appreciated the strong story line, the original format of a video-game and the excellent use of data and visualizations.

The second place goes to team 3VIS (Italy) and the third place to team BUNG BANDA (Hungary). The teams BTCMASTERS (Slovakia) and SPOMINCICE (Slovenia) obtain respectively fourth and fifth place.

The award ceremony will take place on 26 June 2023 at 11:00 (CEST) in Luxembourg and will be web streamed.
