Written statement by the Government Spokesman of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis, as regards the open letter of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus
From the outset, the prime concern and priority of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, has been to break the deadlock, to resume talks from where they were discontinued in Crans-Montana as well as to achieve a definitive solution to the Cyprus problem, based on the agreed framework by the relevant United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolutions for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality.
Our initiatives aimed at creating conditions, conducive to the resumption of talks.
The appointment of Ms Holguín as the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus was the outcome of these initiatives, marking a significant development which reaffirmed the UN Secretary-General’s unabated interest in resolving the Cyprus problem.
Ms Holguín’s endeavours from the moment she obtained her mandate, her commitment as well as her knowledge and experience from respective processes, have contributed to the common effort to break the deadlock.
Ms Holguín’s open letter, which comes a few days before she submits her report to the UN Secretary-General, conveys an encouraging message of her strong will to pursue her endeavours and her belief in achieving a definitive solution to the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework.
We share the same vision with Ms Holguín and the UN Secretary-General for a definitive solution which will make Cyprus a region of peace, security and prosperity.
Ms Holguín’s determination to seek the befitting approach which will lead to the resumption of talks within the UN framework is a testament of her perseverance as well as of the prospects she aspires to achieve.
We reiterate, once again, our readiness to contribute positively to Ms Holguín’s as well as to the UN Secretary-General’s endeavours to implement the UN Security Council Resolutions for the good of our country and future generations.
