Official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, to Japan

Foreign Ministers official visit to Japan opens new chapter in bilateral relations. Economic diplomacy and the opening of a Cyprus Embassy in Tokyo to set Cyprus Japan trade and economic relations on new footing.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, is traveling today Sunday, October 21, 2018, to Tokyo, Japan, for an official after an invitation by the Japanese government.

As part of a busy schedule, Mr Christodoulides will meet with his Japanese counterpart, Mr Taro Kono, and will attend a working dinner that the latter will host in his honour, during which discussions are expected to focus, inter alia, on ways to further strengthen bilateral relations between Cyprus and Japan, in light of the recent signing of the EU – Japan Free Trade Agreement and in view of the opening of a Cyprus’ Embassy in the Japanese capital.

During his stay in Tokyo, Mr Christodoulides will also hold separate meetings with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Kazuyuki Nakane, with Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Mr Hiroshige Seko, and the Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Kentaro Sonoura. He will also meet with the Japan – Cyprus Parliamentary Friendship Group, the Japanese Business Federation and the country’s External Trade Organization.

Mr Christodoulides will also pay a visit to Waseda University of Tokyo, where he is due to deliver a keynote speech at an event on the topic: "A New Age in Cyprus – Japan Relations: the European perspective from the Mediterranean".

From Tokyo, the Foreign Minister will go to Osaka where he will have a series of contacts with the Governor of the Prefecture and representatives of the region's business community, and he will end his trip by visiting the country's cultural capital, Kyoto.
