Dance Artists Residency Programme of the State Gallery of Contemporary Art – Majestic
In the framework of the Dance Residency Programme of the State Gallery of Contemporary Art - Majestic, taking place during May-October 2024 through a collaboration between the Deputy Ministry of Culture – Department of Contemporary Culture and the Dance House Lefkosia, the selected dance artists were Elisavet Panagiotou and the group Belinda Papavasiliou/Fisherwomxn.
The proposals were selected by the Programme’s Planning Committee (Elena Panagiotou, Elena Antoniou and Maria Kamberis), among a total of 10 participation proposals, submitted in response to the relevant Open Call.
The Programme aims to promote synergies between the arts as an integral part of the State Gallery programme, the promotion of the multimodality of the artworks in the permanent exhibition and their alternative interpretations, the engagement of different audiences and the promotion of the work of contemporary Cypriot artists.
Three public activities will take place during each of the two residencies: a seminar/participatory workshop, a discussion/lecture and a performance (in progress).
The public events for the first residency period of the programme featuring Elisavet Panagiotou were successfully concluded last July.
During the second residency period and as part of the ongoing research of the group Belinda Papavasiliou/Fisherwomxn, the following public events are presented:
1. Saturday 28 September 2024, 12:00-16:00
Stream #4 - Museum of the falling daughters
In the context of the Majestic Gallery Residency, Fisherwomxn are hosting the latest iteration of streams, a series of gatherings for the collective study of feminist and anticolonial thought; “Steam #4 aims to question national and patriarchal narratives of the gallery through re-imagining it as a domestic space. What is kept in storage and behind closed doors? What if critical articles from the gallery archive are seen as family albums? What haunts the museum? We invite you for a day at the gallery to listen to the whispers from behind paintings and closed doors, search through the museum archives and construct alternative museum narratives. The program includes an experiential workshop combining movement and writing practices lead by residents Seta Astreou-Κarides, Belinda Papavasiliou and Miriam Gatt interwoven with readings curated by art-historian Ioulita Toumazi. A humble lunch will also be prepared and shared. Feel free to bring something to share.
The workshop is open to all with no prior experience in movement/writing required. This gathering has a limited capacity. Please wear comfortable clothes for moving”.

2. Thursday 31 October, 20:00
Museum of the falling daughter
“The Museum of the Falling Daughter proposes a feminist reading of the Majestic Gallery through an interdisciplinary entanglement of choreography and text. The dramaturgical score re-imagines the gallery as a domestic space and explores the representations of mothers, daughters and fathers in national and patriarchal imaginings. It seeks to question familiar bonds, and how they reflect national and patriarchal structures. What inhabits the gallery? What are its sounds and family albums? A new museum narrative is superimposed on the present, one which is told from the top floor to the ground floor, whispered from behind paintings and closed doors”.
Duration: 60 minutes
