Cyprus hosts the 11th MED9 Summit
Cyprus will host tomorrow, Friday 11 October 2024, the 11th Summit of the Southern EU Countries (MED9).
In addition to Cyprus, which is presiding over the Summit this year, the MED9 group includes France, Greece, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Slovenia.
King Abdullah II of Jordan and the President of the European Commission, Ms Ursula von der Leyen, have also been invited and will attend tomorrow's Southern Europe Leaders' Summit, which will take place in Pafos.
The Summit will be preceded by bilateral meetings. A working luncheon will follow, during which developments in the Middle East will be discussed, followed by two successive working sessions. The first session will focus on relations between the European Union (EU) and Jordan, while the second will discuss Mediterranean priorities in the context of the new EU institutional cycle.
A joint press conference of the Heads of State and Government will be held in the afternoon.
The MED9 group was established in 2013, at the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus, with the aim of strengthening the voice, role and cooperation among, initially, the seven Mediterranean EU Member States –France, Greece, Spain, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Portugal and Cyprus– with the subsequent addition of Slovenia and Croatia in 2021.
