Written statement by the Government Spokesman of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis, on the bilateral meeting of the President of the Republic of Cyprus with His Majesty of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, held a bilateral meeting with His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in the framework of the MED9 Leaders’ Summit, which is taking place in Pafos today.
During the meeting, President Christodoulides and His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein discussed at length the situation in the region, as it has developed, as well as further initiatives which can be undertaken jointly to de-escalate the crisis in the region.
They reaffirmed the excellent relations between Cyprus and Jordan, as well as the need for closer cooperation between the European Union (EU) and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein participates in the MED9 Leaders’ Summit, following President Christodoulides’ invitation, where issues of common concern will be discussed at length with the Heads of State and Government.
President Christodoulides highlighted the role that Jordan plays in the region, and referred to the joint Cyprus-Jordan initiative for the creation of a regional forest firefighting centre based in Cyprus with a permanent presence of aircrafts; a development which, if implemented, will not only act as a catalyst in dealing with crises in our region but will also be tangible evidence of regional cooperation and its potential for the entire region.
The two leaders underlined the great importance of Jordan's presence at today's Summit, especially at this critical time for our wider region, and expressed the hope that concrete actions can be taken jointly.
