Address by the President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades at the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of the Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine

I would firstly like to convey President Anastasiades’ warm greetings to all attendants and best wishes to 2018 graduates. It is also a great honour for me, personally, to be part of this ceremony to mark the graduation of the Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine.

Since its establishment in 2014, the Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine has proved itself to Cyprus’ academic and scientific community a high-quality teaching and research School, thus significantly upgrading the level of medicine expertise in Cyprus.

The high-standard of the School is reflected in the taught and research courses provided to its students. In these four years of operation, the School of Molecular Medicine offers seven programs of study of MSc and PhD Degrees in the fields of Molecular Medicine, Medical Genetics, Neuroscience and Biomedical Research. Today, we are here to honour and congratulate 37 MSc and PhD graduates. You, my dear Graduates, are the living proof that scientific knowledge and research were set from the very beginning as the top priorities of the Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine has, over the years, placed Cyprus in the world medicine stage as a key player. Aiming to address the challenges of today, the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics has brought into the scientific community of our country a new perspective. It managed to introduce innovative and specialized areas, such as nanotechnology and cell storage methods for bio-bank. The constant effort to expand and develop revolutionary medicine approaches and methods, leaves us no doubt that the future in Molecular Medicine in Cyprus is bright.

The Minister of Health acknowledges the need for continuous professional progress and promotion of sciences, research and development, and encourages the establishment of academic Schools such as this one, that can also contribute in the training and education of Cyprus’ health professional in areas with great expertise, so that our patients receive improved healthcare services.

To this end, we are now in the process of implementing the National Health System, which is based on the fundamental principles of social solidarity, equality and universal coverage. The NHS is designed to exploit the structures and human resources of both the public and private sector. Therefore, under the NHS, all beneficiaries will have access to health professionals, hospitals and diagnostic centres of the public and private sector of their choice.

We are positive that the implementation of the Healthcare System Reforms will address effectively and decisively most of the problems and challenges faced today in the healthcare sector, and at the same time will contribute significantly to the improvement of the standard of living of our citizens. The whole health sector in our country is currently at the heart of the most critical reform process that has taken place in recent years and will completely change by 2020.

Dear friends,

I would like to reassure you that both the Ministry of Health and myself work to both upgrade the healthcare sector and provide health professionals with the necessary tools that will facilitate their task.

Our goal is to promote and support the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, so that it continues to exercises its qualitative work. I would like to take this opportunity and thank Professor Phylactou for the effective and tireless work he and his team do in the Institute and the School for the benefit of patients. Also, allow me to express my sincere gratitude to the members of the Council for their excellent effort to promote and upgrade the School, as well as the Dean of the School, Professor Kyriakcos Kyriacou, who has the overall academic responsibility for the School.
