References to the Cyprus issue during the 37th Session of the Human Rights Council

In his intervention at the general debate of the 37th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus in Geneva, Ambassador George Kasoulides, referred to the presentation of the annual report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the violation of human rights in Cyprus, as a direct consequence of the Turkish military invasion and occupation. He expressed his hope that with the solution of the Cyprus Problem, the submission of this report will no longer be necessary.

Ambassador Kasoulides expressed his disappointment for the deadlock of the latest round of talks at Crans-Montana, due to Turkey’s insistence on a unilateral right of intervention and the permanent presence of troops on the island. He also noted that Turkey’s latest gunboat diplomacy in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, is part of Turkey’s disruptive policies and he expressed sadness over the stance of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots on the Turkish actions.

The Permanent Representative reiterated President Anastasiades’ unwavering determination for a settlement to the Cyprus question, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and within the framework of the UN Secretary General’s Good Offices Mission, which will restore the full enjoyment of human rights of all Cypriots.
