The President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades received today, at the Presidential Palace, the United States’ Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Mr Wess Mitchell.

After the meeting, Mr Mitchell told reporters that “I had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Anastasiades and it was important for me, on one of my first trips in this role, to come to Cyprus. And I reiterated to the President our appreciation for this strategic partnership that we have with the Republic of Cyprus.

I also reiterated our desire to see a resumption of talks and our support for a bizonal biccomunal federation. I also reiterated that the United States support the Republic of Cyprus in its right to develop natural resources including in the Exclusive Economic Zone.

I am going to have conversations while I am here with both communities, we will be talking later today with Mr Akinci and I am really pleased to be here. We are very supportive of the Republic of Cyprus, appreciate the long-standing friendship that we have and look forward to being back.”
