Greeting by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mrs. Vassiliki Anastassiadou, on the occasion of the Constitution Day of the Slovak Republic

It is with distinct pleasure and sincere feelings of friendship that I am here to celebrate with you this joyful occasion commemorating the twenty-seventh anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution by the Slovak Parliament, also known as Constitution Day.

This anniversary marks the symbolic date on which the Slovak Parliament adopted a modern and democratic Constitution of the Slovak Republic which remains in history as the highest Act of the sovereign and independent state.

Twenty seven years on, Slovakia is an active Member State of the European Union and NATO, a modern democratic country, with a dynamic economic development and great achievements in the areas of science and technology.

This auspicious occasion, offers me the opportunity to refer, once again, to our excellent bilateral relations which are based on mutual respect and common principles as well as on our genuine affinity towards upholding the principles of international law and the protection of human rights. At the same time, we stand ready to further expand our cooperation in a number of fields, such as defense, bilateral trade, tourism, education and energy.

As close partners in the European Union, we note with satisfaction the common positions that the two countries share within the EU framework on an array of policy issues in order to address the challenges we are increasingly being faced with, both in the Union and in our region.

The excellent relations between Cyprus and Slovakia are also reflected by Slovakia’s active participation in UNFICYP. We highly value its steadfast support for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UNSC Resolutions, International and EU Law. The commendable efforts of the Slovak Government to organize, on a regular basis, contacts between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, under the auspices of the Slovak Embassy in Nicosia is a tangible and much appreciated contribution of Slovakia to the efforts for rapprochement and the building of trust between the two communities.

Let me assure you of Cyprus’ Government unwavering dedication and commitment to exert every effort in order to achieve a comprehensive settlement that will reunify our island, and ensure conditions of peace, stability and prosperity for the future generations of all Cypriots, without the presence of foreign troops and guarantees.

Ladies and gentlemen,

My heartfelt congratulations join the goodwill wishes of all Cypriots for this joyful and symbolic moment of the Slovak people.

I raise my glass in celebration.
