The President of the Republic will participate in the deliberations of the “Friends of Cohesion” Summit, in Portugal

The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, leaves tomorrow for Portugal where he will participate in the deliberations of the “Friends of Cohesion” Summit upon an invitation of the Prime Minister of Portugal, Mr Antόnio Costa.  The “Friends of Cohesion” Group comprises of 15 EU member states.

The main issue the Summit will examine is the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2021-2027.

The Summit will take place on 1 February in Beja, Portugal, and will be attended by heads of states or governments, Ministers, as well as EU Commissioners responsible for the budget, cohesion and reforms.

The Summit has been convened by the Prime Minister of Portugal and is a follow up of the Summit that took place on 5 November, in the Czech Republic. Its objective is coordination in view of the decision expected to be taken on the MFF by the European Council, in Brussels, on 20 February.

The Summit aims to send a message of unity among the “Friends of Cohesion” through a Joint Declaration in order to help facilitate the conclusion of an agreement on the MFF on 20 February.

The President of the Republic will be accompanied to Portugal by the Deputy Government Spokesman, Mr Panagiotis Sentonas.
