Employment at the Government sector: January 2020

In January 2020 the total employment at the government sector increased by 1.215 persons (2,4%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2019 and reached 52.424 persons. Permanent staff decreased by 708 persons (-2,5%), from 28.518 to 27.810 persons. Casual staff increased by 7,2% and reached 16.142 persons compared to 15.056 persons in January 2019.

Compared to January 2019 there is an increase of staff in all personnel categories except Civil Service, with the largest observed in Education (2,9%) and more specifically in the number of casual staff which increased by 17,5% (645 persons).

 

Compared to December 2019, a decrease is observed in all the categories with the largest decrease in both the casual staff of Security Forces (-0,3%) and Education (-0,3%).

Methodological Information

Coverage

Government employment includes Civil Service, Educational Service, Security Forces staff and Hourly Paid Workers. Civil Service includes permanent and casual staff of the Ministries, Departments and Services. Educational Service includes the permanent and casual educational staff of school units and the staff of the Cyprus Productivity Center and the Higher Hotel Institute of Cyprus.  Security Forces include Police Service, Fire Service and the National Guard staff. The Hourly Paid workers include regular, casual and seasonal staff. The members of the House of Representatives are not included.

Collection of data

Data concerning Government employment is provided by the Treasury and refers to the number of persons that were paid in the current month.
