Announcement by the Health Insurance Organization regarding the handling of the 4th wave of the pandemic and the management of positive COVID-19 cases by General Practitioners

In view of the 4th wave of the pandemic that our country is facing, and for a better and more efficient service to patients with COVID-19, the Health Insurance Organization informs beneficiaries that a telephone support programme for positive COVID-19 cases has been set up by GHS personal doctors during the weekends.

In cases where beneficiaries with COVID-19 are not able to receive support by their Personal Doctor during the weekend, they can call the 1420 hotline through which they will be referred to a personal doctor, who participates in the telephone support programme. The programme will run from 31st July, 2021 and on every weekend for the months of August and September. Telephone support will be provided from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.

The Personal Doctor will give instructions and guidance to the patient through the phone and will implement the protocol for the treatment of patients with COVID-19, as defined by the Ministry of Health. In case the personal doctor deems it necessary, he/she will arrange the transfer of the patient with COVID-19 to a hospital by contacting the Ambulance Service.

The Organization would like to underline that all beneficiaries should continue to consult with their own personal doctors first on any medical matter that concerns them, including COVID-19.

At the same time, in view of the pandemic’s epidemiological conditions and the pressure that the country’s health system has been under, and in particular the Accident and Emergency / First Aid Departments – it is very important that beneficiaries avoid visiting the A&E Departments for non-emergencies and for incidents that are not related to accidents. In most cases, with the exception of accidents, medical issues should first be evaluated by the Personal Doctors before patients visit the A&E Departments.

The Organization urges beneficiaries to cooperate with the health care professionals and to follow the above instructions, aiming to provide the most efficient service to them and to support the country’s health system during this difficult period.
