Venice Biennale 2024: Participation of Cyprus in the 60th International Art Exhibition – Biennale Arte 2024

The next Venice Biennale of Art will take place between 20 April and 24 November 2024. The Board of La Biennale di Venezia has appointed Adriano Pedrosa, art historian and museum curator, as Director of the Visual Arts Sector. Adriano Pedrosa (Brazil) is currently the artistic director of Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand – MASP.

Pedrosa is the first curator from South America to be appointed by the Biennale organization. Prior to that he was adjunct curator of the 24th Bienal de São Paulo (1998), co-curator of the 27th Bienal de São Paulo (2006), curator of 31st Panorama da Arte Brasileira-Mamõyaguara opá mamõ pupé (Museu de Arte Moderna, São Paulo, 2009) co-curator of the 12th Istanbul Biennial, and curator of the São Paulo Pavilion at the 9th Shanghai Biennale (2012), among others. He has published widely, in art journals like Artforum, Art Nexus, Exit, Flash Art, Frieze, Mousse, Parkett. In early 2023 he was recipient of the Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence, given by the Central for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, New York.


Ι. THE PARTICIPATION OF CYPRUS

Cyprus will be participating in the 60th International Art Exhibition – Biennale Arte 2024. As in previous years, the Cyprus Pavilion will be housed at Associazione Culturale Spiazzi, Castello 3865, 30124 Venezia, near the Arsenale.

The participation of Cyprus will be selected through an Open Call for Proposals, by the Deputy Ministry’s Advisory Committee for the Selection of Artists and Works, comprising of independent art professionals.

The current Committee Members are:

-        Eleonora Antoniadou, architect and academic (Member)

-        Gabriel Koureas, art historian and academic (Member)

-        Christodoulos Panayiotou, visual artist (Member)

-        Maria Petrides, art writer and curator (Member)

-        Louli Michaelidou, Cultural Officer A’ (Acting President, in lieu of the Acting Director of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture – Deputy Ministry of Culture).


In its last session, the Committee decided the following:

  1. This year's Open Call will be inviting all-inclusive participation proposals (joint artistic and curatorial proposals), with a submission deadline of Friday, 2 June 2023. The Terms of participation in the Open Call are described in Part II below.
  2. With the view to improve the selection and preparation timelines for the Cypriot participation, the Open Call for the 61st Venice Biennale (2026) will be published by November 2024.


II. OPEN CALL FOR PROPOSALS - CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

Participants in the Open Call are invited to submit all-inclusive proposals, which should include a joint artistic and curatorial proposal.

Participation proposals should clearly express the breadth and practical and theoretical scope of the artistic and curatorial rationale for the Cyprus Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale. Proposals should contain:

  1. Names of contributors: artist(s) or artist groups, curator(s) or curatorial groups (required) and other collaborators such as theoreticians, writers, architects, designers, etc. (optional).
  2. Concise biographies of contributors and collaborators (if any).
  3. Concise proposal rationale, up to 500 words.
  4. Supportive material, up to 20 pages (i.e. drawings, texts, visual/audio or other material).
  5. Representative samples of contributors' previous work, up to 20 pages (works, exhibitions etc.).
  6. Full contact details of contributors.
  7. Proposals for participation should be submitted no later than Friday, 2 June 2023 by email, to info@cyprusinvenice.org. The total file size of each submitted proposal must not exceed 20MB. An acknowledgement of receipt will be sent.
  8. The results of the Open Call will be announced in the Daily Press and online, on the pages www.cyprusinvenice.org, www.culture.gov.cy and www.facebook.com/cypruspavilion.
