European Statistics Competition, National Phase - Results

The Statistical Service, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society announce the completion of the National Phase of the European Statistical Competition 2023-24.

The participation in the national phase of the competition was open to all secondary education students who were studying at any officially recognised educational institution of Cyprus. Students participated in teams of two to three pupils and each team had a teacher from their institution acting as the tutor, who was supervising, coordinating and tutoring the team. The teams participated in one of two categories as follows:

Category A: Upper Secondary [up to 18 years on 31/12/2023]

Category B: Lower Secondary [up to 16 years on 31/12/2023]

The competition comprised two assignments. In the First Assignment, which included three parts, a total of 154 teams participated, consisting of 449 students. The three parts were as follows: (a) Basic knowledge test, (b) Use of official statistical data sources test and (c) Interpretation of statistical reports test. The top 10 teams with the highest score in the upper secondary education category and the top 11 teams (due to a 2-team tie for the 10th place) in the lower secondary education category, qualified to the Second Assignment, in which they had to prepare a presentation of a statistical analysis based on a dataset given by the organisers. For the first time in the national phase of the competition, the teams were also asked to present their assignment before the jury. The final ranking of the teams, based on the score of the second assignment, determined the winning team in each category.

The winning teams in each category A and B receive the following awards: the tutor of the winning team a tablet and each student of the winning team the amount of 200 euro. The teams with the second highest overall score in each category receive the following awards: the tutor of the team a graphic tablet and each student of the team the amount of 50 euro. The first two teams with the highest scores of each category are eligible to participate in the European phase of the competition.

Information regarding the award ceremony will be announced in due time.
