The deliberations of the 20th World Conference of Overseas Cypriots begin tonight

The deliberations of the 20th World Conference of Overseas Cypriots by the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK), the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA) and the Youth of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) will be hosted in Cyprus, from 27/8/2019 to 30/8/2019, at Filoxenia Conference Center, in Lefkosia.

The opening ceremony will be broadcast via Cytanet live streaming, on the website of the Presidential Commissioner at www.commissionertothepresidency.gov.cy and by RIK TV channel. The conference’s deliberations will be declared by the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, today, at 7 p.m.

The Presidential Commissioner, Mr Photis Photiou, the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Syllouris, Archbishop Chrysostomos II and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece – Minister for Diaspora Greeks, Mr Antonis Diamataris, will address the ceremony. The Head of POMAK, Mr Andreas Papaevripides, the Head of PSEKA, Mr Philip Christopher and the President of NEPOMAK, Mr Christos Tuton, will also address the ceremony. The ceremony will begin with an artistic program entitled “NOSTOS” and a tribute to a Cypriot of the homeland, Nikos Mouyiaris.

In the following days, delegates will be briefed, in closed sessions, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, on Cyprus foreign policy and on the latest news concerning the Cyprus problem, and also by the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Mr Yiorgos Lakkotrypis on the issue of hydrocarbons and energy policy. Additionally, the Presidential Commissioner, Mr Photis Photiou, and the Greek Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), Mr Leonidas Pantelides will speak about issues relating to the missing persons.

A presentation of the Guide for Cyprus Diaspora and Repatriates and investment opportunities in Cyprus will take place in the framework of the Conference. Moreover, there will be a discussion of the issue of Islamisation and alteration of the population characteristics, and the religious and cultural disaster in the occupied areas of the Republic. The delegates will, also, be informed about the program “Adopt an athlete on the way to Tokyo 2020”.

The delegates will have the opportunity to participate in discussions with leaders and representatives of political parties and the Central Committee of Overseas Cypriots organizations will be received by President Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace.

In addition, during the four days of the Conference, a Youth Trilateral Conference with the participation of young people from Cyprus, Greece and Israel, will also be held at Filoxenia Conference Center (Morfou Hall), in the framework of the three countries’ cooperation between the diaspora communities. 

The Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Mr Isaac Herzog, the Armenian High Commissioner for Diaspora, Mr Zareh John Sinanyan, the Minister for Romanians Abroad, Ms Natalia Elena Intotero, and the State Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Mr Nemanja Stevanovic, will be present at the 20th Conference.

The representatives of all overseas Cypriots organizations will perform a review of their work and an adoption of resolutions will follow. The deliberations end with a Press conference given by the Presidents of POMAK, PSEKA and NEPOMAK at the Presence of the Presidential Commissioner, on Friday 30th August, at 10.40 am.
