Photographic exhibition titled “Meditations” in collaboration with the international organisation for photography “Magnum Photos”

The Department of Antiquities announces the opening of an exhibition under the title "Meditations", which is organised in collaboration with the renowned international organisation "Magnum Photos", with the contribution of BPRarts Cultural Management, on Saturday 21 April 2018, in the courtyard of the Limassol Castle.

The exhibition is organised within the framework of the celebrations of the International Day for Monuments and Sites of ICOMOS, celebrated on the 18th of April of each year, and the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. On the 18th of May 2018 the exhibition will be presented in the courtyard of the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia, as part of the events that will celebrate the ICOM International Museum Day. It will thereafter be exhibited in the courtyard of the Larnaka Castle on the 21st of June 2018, and on the 26th of July 2018 at the archaeological site of Kato Pafos.

The famous "Magnum Photos" is a photographic co-operative comprised by distinguished photographers. As such, it is characterised by the vision and insight of these different artists, the photographs of which compose a chronicle for the entire world. Their photographs interpret human nature, personalities, everyday events, politics, but also disasters and conflict. Based in New York, London, Paris and Tokyo, "Magnum Photos" contributes the dissemination and promotion of these photographs to the press and the media, galleries and museums across the world.

This exhibition, given the role of "Magnum Photos" in the art of photography, and the recording of important moments in history, the society and nature, aims at highlighting the relationship between specific photographers of this organisation and ancient monuments throughout Europe, including Cyprus. The unique insight into the sphere of archaeological heritage, as this is presented in these works of art, creates another context for these monuments, across time and space, as they become eternal within a different perspective. As the objective of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 is to reinforce the relationship between society and our culture, this exhibition constitutes the best way to highlight this special kind of art, but also our culture. The photographers that will be presented in the exhibition are Josef Koudelka, George Rodger, Nikos Ekonomopoulos, David Seymour, Ferinando Scianna, Herbert List, Elliot Erwitt and Micha Bar Am. Their photographs will be accompanied by quotes taken from poems, composed by distinguished poets.
