Groups of patients/citizens referred to Public Health Medical Centres to take the laboratory test for the new coronavirus

The Ministry of Health, for public health reasons and aiming to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus COVID-19, especially in vulnerable groups of the population, has currently arranged the possibility of realisation of the new coronavirus laboratory test in groups of patients and citizens as indicated in the table below:

 

 

Specific groups of citizens that are referred to a laboratory test

Procedure

1

Cancer patients about to begin a particular therapy/treatment.

The attending doctor, who should be a specialist in oncology, shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

People who are slated for surgery

The attending doctor, who should be a specialist in surgery, shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

Pregnant women who will give birth soon (it is recommended that the test should be taken as close as possible to the expected due date)

The attending obstetrician-gynaecologist, shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

Elderly people who will be admitted to Elderly People Nursing Homes.

The personal doctor shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

People who suffer from mental diseases who will be admitted to mental health centres.

The attending psychiatrist shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

People who have been victims of violence (adults and children) who will be admitted to care centres.

The attending doctor or medical partner, shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

Drug-dependent people who will be admitted to Drug Rehabilitation Clinics

The attending psychiatrist shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

People who wish to visit their 1st degree relatives that are hospitalized in intensive care, provided that the attending doctors give their consent.  

The attending doctor of the patient shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).

Women who are victims of trafficking.

The attending doctor or medical partner, shall send a particular referral to the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics (fax: 22398842).  

 

Accessibility to the test can also be arranged in various other cases as well, even in a unique case, if deemed necessary by the Epidemiology Monitoring Unit and Infectious Diseases Centre, by the 1420 service or by the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics for public health reasons.

After receiving the relevant referral, the Coordination Unit of Public Health Clinics shall proceed with the planning and briefing of the people interested for the immediate realization of the test at the various Public Health District Medical Centres. The results of the laboratory test shall be communicated to the attending doctor.

The realization of the programme described above will be regularly monitored by a central authority, so that the implementation of the defined procedures remains secured.

It should be taken into consideration that the procedure for the realization of the test and the announcement of the results after the sample has been taken needs about 1-2 days to be completed. Consequently, the attending doctors have to ensure that the people that are going to take the test will be referred within the appropriate time frame.
