Statement of the Commissioner for Volunteerism, Mr. Yiannis Giannakis, for the completion of the humanitarian aid to Lebanon

The Office of the Commissioner for Volunteerism and NGOs announces that on the 4th of September 2020, at the Port of Limassol, the loading of the remaining humanitarian aid to support the long-suffering people of Lebanon was being completed. After loading the ship departed for Lebanon.

The whole campaign was implemented by the Office of the Commissioner for Volunteerism and NGOs in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The shipment totaled 200 tonnes, and it included long-term packaged foods collected through the campaign and medical equipment donated by the Ministry of Health, and was placed in 24 containers.

The result of this campaign was for Cyprus to send the largest humanitarian aid it has ever sent totaling approximately 280 tonnes, including 6.5 tonnes airlifted and 70 tonnes shipped on Navy Vessel “IKARIA’’earlier.

Good coordination, activation of the emergency volunteer management protocol and the Pancyprian Coordination Center for Humanitarian Aid Management and synergies created with Local Authorities, Businesses and Companies, The Cyprus Red Cross Society, Voluntary and Non-Governmental Organizations, combined with the selfless contribution of thousands of citizens, to bring about this amazing result.

The contribution of the National Guard and the Civil Defense in the process of loading and transport was invaluable. Also important is the contribution of our volunteers, who undertook the collection, separation, quality control check, and placement of items in boxes at the five collection points.

In this great calamity in the neighboring country, the Cypriot people once again showed their humanitarian face by creating a humanitarian bridge that united the two countries. I would like to thank all those who contributed and collaborated in this great effort with this impressive result that makes us all proud.
