Written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Mr Andreas Iosif

In the schedule of President Anastasiades next week, the official visit to Cyprus by the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel is especially important.

The visit will take place on Thursday, 5 May. The President of the Republic and the Prime Minister of Luxembourg will discuss the latest developments regarding the war in Ukraine and the ongoing efforts to end hostilities, as well as a number of European issues such as, inter alia, the European Union’s energy independence and the migration crisis. During the meeting, ways to strengthen cooperation between small EU member states will also be discussed.

Cyprus and Luxembourg maintain excellent bilateral relations and during their meeting Mr Anastasiades and Mr Bettel will exchange views, with the aim to find ways to further enhance them.

President Anastasiades will brief the Prime Minister of Luxembourg on the latest developments on the Cyprus issue, on the readiness of the Greek Cypriot side to resume the dialogue and on the initiative he has undertaken for the implementation of the Confidence Building Measures he has proposed.

He will point out the need for the EU to assume a more vital role in the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, and stress the need for Turkey to adopt the same constructive stance as the Greek Cypriot side for the resumption of the negotiation process, to terminate the violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus at sea, as well as to put an end to its plans regarding the enclosed area of Famagusta, which are in violation of the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

President Anastasiades will reiterate that the Republic of Cyprus remains committed to UN Security Council resolutions, the international law and the European acquis.

On Monday, 2 May, at 9:30 in the morning, the President of the Republic will receive the annual report of the Law Commissioner, Ms Louiza Christodoulidou – Zannetou, at the Presidential Palace. On the same day, at 10 am, he will receive a delegation of the Federation of Repatriated Cypriots.

On Wednesday, 4 May, at 9 am, a meeting of the Council of Ministers is scheduled.
