Curriculum vitae of the new Minister of Defence, Mr Michalis Giorgallas

Michalis Giorgallas was born in Marathovounos in Famagusta, on 20 October 1968.

He graduated from Lanitio Lyceum in Lemesos. He served his military service as a commando at the 31st Commando Battalion.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree (BSc) and a Master’s Degree (MSc) in Chemical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He specialised in ISO International Standard Systems and Green Energy at the Center for Renewable Energy Sources of Greece. He was accredited by the Ministry of Labour on Health and Safety issues. He worked in consulting and managerial positions in companies and organisations in Greece and Cyprus. In parallel with his studies, he attended the “Journalism Workshop of Thessaloniki” and collaborated with media in Cyprus and Greece. He was an active member of the student movement in Greece. He was Deputy President of the European Party and the Solidarity Movement.

Michalis Giorgallas was a member of the National Council for the period 2012-2017 and a member of the House of Representatives for the Ammochostos Constituency for the period 2016-2021. During his term in the House of Representatives he was Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources and a member of the Parliamentary Committees on (I) Financial and Budgetary Affairs, (II) Educational Affairs and Culture, (III) Environment, (IV) Development Plans and Public Expenditure Control. He was also a member of various Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committees and an alternate member of the delegation of the Cyprus House of Representatives to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, while he participated in many parliamentary missions abroad.

Michalis Giorgallas is married to Dr. Maria Paleomylitou and they have a son, Angelos.
