Programme of Events Celebrating International Museum Day and the European Night of Museums 2024

The Department of Antiquities, Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Cyprus National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), announce that, within the framework of International Museum Day (18th May), under the theme “Museums for Education and Research”, and the European Night of Museums, numerous events will be organized, most with free entrance.

The objective of International Museum Day, established by ICOM in 1977, is to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society, to raise awareness of the fact that Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, education, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.

This year’s theme “Museums for Education and Research” underscores the pivotal role of cultural institutions in providing a holistic educational experience, involving the triggering of curiosity, experimentation, creativity and critical thinking. This day also pushes for a more peaceful, conscious, sustainable and inclusive world.

Organised on and around the 18th of May each year, International Museum Day celebrations can last a day, a weekend, a whole week or a month. Participation in International Museum Day is growing internationally. In 2023, more than 37,000 Museums participated in the celebrations, in around 158 countries. In Cyprus, this year’s programme includes events organised by almost 30 Museums and other cultural institutions, throughout the month of May.

The public can download the programme of events from the Department of Antiquities’ website and social media (Facebook and Instagram), as well as from the websites and social media platforms of the participating museums.
