Address by the Director of the PIO, Ms Sophie Michaelides, at the EBU Gala Dinner, co-hosted by the PIO

Welcome to our island, which, even though still occupied and divided, gives about 530 million results on Google. 530 million results showing the island’s rich mythological and cultural heritage and history. A history of more than 10 thousand years which manifests the civilization, hardship, struggle, rebirth, change, adaptation and creativity of the island.

An open-air museum, since you will never have to look far to find a piece of its captivating history and culture.

Our Cyprus.

  • Charming, sophisticated and cosmopolitan.
  • With modern cities, picturesque villages and breath-taking sceneries.
  • A country that is stable and credible.
  • A unique investment destination due to its:
  1. Exceptional quality of human capital,
  2. Modern and transparent legal and tax framework,
  3. The recently restructured banking sector,
  4. The country’s location
  5. And its excellent professional services and skilled labour force.
  • A bridge of political cooperation between the European Union and the Eastern Mediterranean, as Minister Christodoulides, I am sure, will elaborate soon after.

Our Cyprus. Of 300 days of sunshine, with warm summers and mild winters. With 800.000 well-educated, devoted, hard-working, multi-lingual, fun and talented people.

For this country and these people, ladies and gentlemen, my Team at the Press and Information Office work. To provide informed and media-savvy Communication Services to the State, and creative and innovative Information Services to its people. By means of interpersonal, non-verbal, audiovisual, written and oral communication.

We have progressed from doing digital communication, to communicating in today’s completely digital environment. We operate in a media environment where speed is essential, since a tweet or a post can steal or create the headlines. We are, as you, an important and essential part of the chain, where the political, media, communication, information and the technology industries have to come together with society, and create efficient networks of cooperation. Because no one can keep the dialogue between the “message industry” and the “receiving end” going alone.

It is a pleasure having you all in Cyprus and especially in Limassol. The city which first gave Richard the Lionheart, our sweet wine Koumandaria, which you taste tonight. Where gastronomy mixes the best of Greek and Middle Eastern influences into a colourful combination of taste and again you will experience it tonight. But most importantly, Limassol is the city which gave birth, raised and presented to the world, our very own Mr Michalils Maratheftis.
